Event description

Description

If you're an educator who loves gaming in the classroom, consider coming out on December 9th, 2017 from 10 AM to 3 PM for "Learning with Dungeons and Dragons"! The event will be held in the Media Center of Raritan High School, located at 419 Middle Road, Hazlet, NJ 07730. You're more than welcome to bring your own devices or D&D materials (if you have any).

Be sure to check out the Patreon and new student-made video or subscribe to the live stream account.

The five-hour session will cover all of your basic needs and basics of gameplay:

10:00 - 11:00 - Presentation concerning classroom practices, motivation, and tying gameplay to relevant texts.

11:00 - 12:00 - Character creation and navigating the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide. Also, taking time to approach best research practices for students and how to effectively navigate setup.

12:00 - 12:30 - Lunch Break - Pizza will be provided.

12:30 - 2:00 - Practicing on-the-spot story creation, DMing, and aspects of storytelling. Groups will rotate DMs for the sake of practicing and taking the lead in a narrative. Attention will be paid to ability checking, basic combat, and inserting text analysis.

2:00 - 3:00 - Choosing a text of interest for your course and developing a campaign. This can encompass ideas such as general story, NPCs, elision to curriculum, monster creation, and maps.

Mostly, the idea is to have a fun, interactive day filled with learning and idea creation. Hopefully, this will build a network of educators who can reach out to one another as they work through trying it out in the classroom.

FAQs:

Why Dungeons and Dragons?

With gamification sweeping through a vast majority of classrooms, it seems natural to incorporate an established role-playing game that is the impetus for current gaming schema. Furthermore, there has been a great deal of research surrounding D&D and its positive effects on mental health, establishing the groundwork for effectiveness within the classroom environment.

Where is my money going?

All of the basic admission costs will be covering buying physical texts, lunch, gaming materials (including dice you can keep!), and paper takeaways. The elevated tickets for the handbook and manuals are in place in case you would like your own personal copy or copies to take home that day.

How do I get to the Media Center?

When coming through the main doors of the high school, you will make an immediate right into the J hallway. The hallway will eventually bear left, and you will then take the next hallway on your right. About halfway down, the Media Center will be on your right. Signs will be posted to guide you.
