Event description

Description

The 2019 Relational Summit is a collection of events taking place on September 19-22 that provides space to explore and connect through relational practices for learning and healing.

The theme for this year's Summit is Learning Together, which applies relational-cultural theory (RCT) toward both teaching and learning through relationships, mindful of cultural context. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Harriet Schwartz, author of "Connected Teaching: Relationship, Power, and Mattering in Higher Education." Bloomington Center for Connection will also partner with the City of Bloomington to present an afternoon workshop led by Dr. LaShawn Williams to address local racism within the community. Both events will take place on Saturday, September 21.

Dr. Schwartz is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and Counseling and Chair of the Master’s of Arts in Student Affairs program at Carlow University. She is also the Lead Scholar for Education as Relational Practice with the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute. Dr. Schwartz is particularly interested in integrating social justice and social action into the curriculum and her other professional work. Her keynote presentation is titled, "Fierce Connection: A Relational Response to Hate.

Dr. LaShawn Williams is a licensed clinical social worker and Assistant Professor at Utah Valley University, where she teaches in the Behavioral Science Department and Directs the Baccalaureate Social Work Program. Dr. Williams is a dynamic and inspirational speaker who is returning to Bloomington for this second Relational Summit.

Dr. Williams focuses her research on the use of relationships for cross-cultural curricular delivery in the classroom. She also helps future social workers to build culturally competent practices.

Some Summit events are reserved for conference attendees, but others are open to the public. Space for public events are already reserved for Summit attendees.
