Twice each month we’ll gather at Bookstore1Sarasota to enjoy poetry or prose published in both Spanish and English. Knowledge of Spanish, while helpful, is not necessary. This book club is meant to be a fun and painless introduction to the beautiful language spoken by so many of our friends and neighbors here in Sarasota.

The first session will feature three poems from the collection: Juego (Game), Entre irse quedarse (Between Coming and Going) and Como quien oy llover (As One Listens to the Rain)

The second session using this book will focus on poems selected from the collection by book club attendees.

Mexican author Octavio Paz enjoyed a worldwide reputation as a master poet and essayist. Although Mexico figures prominently in Paz’s work he is considered truly international and appeals to readers of diverse backgrounds. Paz won the Nobel Prize in 1990.

Book Club leader, Carlos Goebels, is a retired college educator and human resources director with extensive knowledge and experience in Latin American culture, Spanish, English as a Second Language (ESL), French, public speaking, business communication, and acrylic painting. He earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in Speech Communication from the University of Maryland (College Park) and has taught numerous college and adult education courses.
