Description

Milwaukee, WI

Featured Speaker: Gabrielle Esperdy, PhD, Associate Professor of Architecture at NJIT

This hour long presentation will place the contemporary challenges women face in professional practice in historical context through two interconnected case studies: the emergence and efficacy of professional and affinity groups in the 1960s and 1970s and the career of Natalie de Blois. The feminist and civil rights ferment of era, combined with the fact that women represented less than 4% of all architects practicing in the U.S., prompted activists architect to organize for change in the profession. Among them was Natalie de Blois, senior designer at SOM and a collaborator on many of the firm’s most iconic buildings, who was a founding member of Chicago Women in Architecture and a key player on the AIA’s Task Force on the Status of Women.

In light of contemporary activism, the presentation will pay particular attention to the strategies women used to accomplish their goals, including organizing and education, mentoring and networking, and community and association. To this end, the presentation will consider how women operated within existing professional institutions and at how they forged new associations in order to better address their professional needs. It will also examine the importance of community identity, as group members defined what it meant to be architects who were women and women who were architects—and how these identities challenged the “old boy” architectural establishment.

Food and drink provided.
