Learn to Pedal / Beginner Rider 1-Day:  Ages 5-13

This is an excellent clinic to jump start your child’s riding ability and confidence about riding a bicycle.

Learning to ride a bicycle is a moment in someone’s life that will likely be a lifelong memory. Many times it is a moment of huge growth and accomplishment. In this camp, we welcome kids ages 5 - 13 who are beginner riders.

Learn to Pedal: There are sub-levels of beginner riders. We welcome beginners ages 5 - 13, who

  • have no experience with a bicycle whatsoever

  • have experience with training wheels or strider type bicycles and are ready for the next step

  • may be fearful / hesitant / resistant / emotional

  • struggle to hold their balance

Beginner Riders:

  • can pedal but use their feet to stop or having trouble stopping

  • slow reaction times

  • have a hard time starting or weave excessively while riding

  • you as a parent would consider their ability as “new” or “beginner”

  • would benefit from an outside source teaching them to ride

Children learn at different rates, and some progress faster than others. We cannot guarantee that every child will begin to pedal in this 1-day clinic, but the vast majority of our campers do pedal. Following the 1-day clinic you can expect your child to a.) be pedaling and braking, b.) be pedaling and working towards braking, or c.) have progressed a significant amount and know what they need to continue practicing at home. They should all show a positive attitude towards riding. The 1-day clinic is a great jumpstart into learning to pedal and building good beginner level control of their bicycle. The kids will have worked hard and will be tired.

Class operates in a safe, enclosed parking lot as a learning environment, but we use this setting to create courses with a variety of drills and adaptive techniques so children can practice fundamental skills safely based on your child's individual abilities. We highly recommend signing up for one of our Learn to Pedal/Early Rider &/or Early Rider / Intermediate Rider summer camps, which offers a comprehensive week-long program. Repeated days of riding while also focusing on specific drills will dramatically change your child’s riding ability.

We welcome working with a diversity of children. If you believe your child needs specialized instruction or your child has special needs, please contact us to discuss options that will offer appropriate support for your child’s success. We also offer private, one-on-one lessons.

Pedaling Minds is a 501 c3 founded by 2008 Olympian, Mike Friedman. Over the last five years, over 1100 kids have come through the program, all of which learned to ride or became safer and better riders. Through afterschool programs, summer camps, private camps, and weekend clinics and assemblies we help teach and strengthen the life-long activity of riding a bicycle.

  • Mike spent 20 years racing bicycles 10 of those professionally. On the road he’s raced Paris Roubaix, Milan San Remo, Flanders amongst others while racing in 32 different countries. In 2008 he became an Olympian representing the United States.

  • Retiring in 2014, he founded a program for kids called Pedaling Minds, a 501c3, www.PedalingMinds.org and teaches kids/adults how to ride bicycles in control.

  • Pedaling Minds also has a STEM Curriculum that teaches a multitude of sciences through the lens of a bicycle. Concepts in energy conservation, water conservation, rocketry, electrolysis, mechanics,  physics, health and more.

  • The program is very active within the Boulder Valley community and has worked in the past within BVSD Life Long Learning and now operates their own summer camps, after-school programs, private lessons and weekend Clinics.
