Event description

Description

Learn the sport of curling at one of our Learn to Curl classes! These sessions are a great way to get ready for our upcoming leagues.

In this 2 1/2-hour session, you will receive formal instruction about the sport, including stone delivery, sweeping, and basic strategy. You will also have the opportunity to play part of a game alongside your classmates. Cool, huh?

The fun doesn't end when the stones stop sliding; come out "broomstacking" with us after! That's the time-honored tradition of sitting down for a beverage and/or bite with your teammates and opponents after the game. Winners traditionally buy the first round (and the defeated team gets the second one!). All ages are welcome to join us.

FAQs

Do I need to be a member of the club to participate in Learn to Curl?

No! Learn to Curl is great for for people who either have NOT curled before, or haven't curled in a long time and need a refresher. At Learn to Curl, you try the sport, and see if you like it. We teach you everything you need to know to begin playing the game in leagues with us as a member!

Do I need a team? Can I come alone?

Curling is a social sport. If you come with others, it's a great time with friends and family. If you come alone, it's a wonderful way to meet new people (who also happened to find us and decide that curling would be a fun thing to try!). Your choice!

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

There's no minimum age, but age 12 and up is generally best. You must be able to get enough "push" to slide a 42-pound granite stone on ice. Some of our curlers have been younger. Our youngest league player is 11, and we've had event participants slightly younger than that.

Can people come watch?

Yes - spectators are welcome.

What should I wear?

You will be on the ice for 2 hours, so dress appropriately:

  • Wear warm, comfortable clothing that allows you to lunge.
  • Dressing in layers is a good option, as you will start out cold and have periods of time when you will sweat (good sweeping warms you right up).
  • Thin gloves may be helpful - sometimes the brooms get cold.
  • Consider wearing a tucked-in shirt. If your bottoms have belt loops, it may be a good idea to use a belt (see above about lunging and connect the dots!).
  • Make sure your footwear is thick, flat, gripping sneaker-type shoes – no boots or uneven soles (these will have virtually no grip!), or very thin soles (you'll get very cold!). It should be as flat as possible - nothing with a heel.
  • Do not wear scarves or clothes that may drag on the ice.
  • You may want to bring a knee pad, such as those for volleyball.
  • If there is protective equipment that you choose to bring, you are welcome to do so. Some of our curlers choose to wear helmets, for example.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There is free parking on-site. Long Island Rail Road service is also nearby, though you will need to take a cab or make other arrangements. If you have transportation concerns, let us know and we'll do our best to provide suggestions.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Leave a voicemail at 516-900-CURL (2875), or email licurling@gmail.com. Email gets a faster response! The phone number is mostly voicemail-only! We are an all-volunteer organization.
