Learn to Code
Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 11:00 AM - Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 1:00 PM (PDT)
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
Learn to Code is a guided introduction to building web applications targeted specifically to nontechnical students and business professionals. Increasingly, jobs at technology driven companies require everyone to understand the basics of how web applications work.
When: Every Tuesday from May 27th, 2014 to June 24th, 2014
Where: SF State Downtown Campus, 835 Market Street, 5th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94103
During this workshop, students will better understand the tools, processes, and lingo of today’s web development world. Each session will be devoted to a new topic, with the majority of the time dedicated to coding in-class. Using the popular Ruby language, students will build a barebones Twitter application by following stepbystep guides (don't worry we go slow). There is no homework or outside time required, but students should expect to be fully engaged for each 2 hour session.
The workshop is aimed to give students a real advantage in the job market, by giving you the tools and knowledge to better interact with your technical colleagues. Learn to Code at SF State is also the perfect starting point for entrepreneurs who want to build their own ideas on the web.
The workshop is very hands-on, as students will learn (by doing):
∙ How code is written
∙ Which languages are used, and why
∙ How web applications actually work
∙ Where data is stored
∙ What are common frameworks used by developers
∙ How to share code and work with contractors
∙ What standard databases look like
∙ How code is tested and deployed
Session 1 (Tuesday, May 27th, 2014): Introducing Developer Tools
Session 2 (Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014): Crash course in Web Programming Fundamentals
Session 3 (Tuesday, June 10th, 2014): Understanding Databases and Sharing Code
Session (Tuesday, June 17th, 2014): Testing and Styling Your Code
