About this Event

The Employee LEAP program is a series of workshops giving participants the necessary skills and knowledge to make them more productive, efficient, and valuable in the organization. The LEAP acronym stands for:

•L – Learn

•E – Engage

•A – Apply

•P – Perform

Specifically, this 4-hour Business Grammar workshop gives employees the tools to demonstrate professionalism and credibility through effective communication in all its aspects: grammar, punctuation, and style.

This session introduces participants to the 10 characteristics of effective business writing, each of which is interspersed with grammatical points to enhance a learner’s understanding of business grammar. Proceeding first to define a verb, particularly an action verb, and moving to a verb’s classification (action, linking, helping, and auxiliary), the session uses fun and engaging activities to make language more expressive. Participants see how tact, tone, and humor affect how readers perceive the author’s intended message with an emphasis on making writing more reader-focused and positive.

Next, this session highlights the importance of using active voice instead of passive construction. It introduces the concepts of tense (simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous) and time (past, present, future) along with passive to active sentence activity to reinforce these voice and tense constructions.

The session then stresses the importance of making business communication more unified and coherent through using ‘parallel structured’ strategies that incorporate headings and bullets.  Participants see what happens when a writer misplaces modifiers, or omits them.  A discussion on a sentence’s clarity and concision ensues, culminating on keeping it short and simple (KISS).

Creating mechanically sound sentences using correct punctuation is this session’s next topic.

Finally, with this session’s focal point on business grammar, it concludes with businesses’ most commonly used form of communication – the email - that explores subject, headings, salutations, message, closing and best practices to deliver a professional business communication.

Once participants learn the material, participants engage with it using interactive workshop activities. Then, they apply the material in their work environment and perform to the best of their abilities having acquired new talent and skills.
