Think you have a good idea?
PROVE IT

Lean Startup Machine is an intensive workshop where entrepreneurs put Lean methodologies to work in the real world.

THREE STAGES OF VALIDATION

Our Validation Board is a tool we have perfected at over 50 workshops and with hundreds of startups. We invite you to spend a few days with us to see if you can validate the need for your new product or service.

  1. STEP ONE = PROBLEM / CUSTOMER FIT - you will learn customer development and will need to prove that someone actually has the problem you think they do...MVP level one, talk to customers
  2. STEP TWO = SOLUTION - if your customer development interviews validate a problem, it should be pretty easy to collect currency from these customers. MVP level two, pitch a solution before building and investing in expensive code
  3. STEP THREE = SOLUTION / CUSTOMER FIT if your customers give you money, or time and attention in exchange for the promise of your solution, it is time to deliver the solution on a small, manual scale.
  • Learn Customer Development, then practice by talking to actual customers.
  • Learn how to design experimentsthen get results using the scientific method.
  • Learn about different types of Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), then test them against your customer, problem and solution hypothesis.
  • Learn the difference between customer segments and demographics.
  • Learn why your first customer is not "everyone with x"
  • Find your early adoptors.
  • See why it's harder to solve problems than to build solutions.
  • Learn how to build a model T, not a faster racehorce.
  • Deliver your solution and collect currency!

Event Schedule...

Friday 5pm - 9pm  you will show up, eat kebap, meet mentors and network with fellow attendees. Those who come as individuals will pitch a problem they want to solve and we will form about 10 teams in total. At around 9pm you will start constructing your first experiment designed to test, empirically, your problem hypothesis and customer hypothesis. Teams will break for the night when they have a developed a provable hypothesis and have practiced their customer development skills with a mentor.

Saturday 9am-9pm those assumptions will be tested with customers. Most of your assumptions will likely be WRONG, so you will iterate rapidly to validate a new set of assumptions. You will go through several Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), escalating from Exploration, to Pitch, to Concierge. After you get out of the building for the second time to talk to customers, and to have lunch  Fatih Guner will talk about what Lean Startup means to him at 2pm.

Sunday 9am-7pm afternoon you will present your learnings to the other teams and to a jury. This is not just a learning exercise, you will actually be competing with other teams to win additional mentorship and support. You will be judged, based on how well you followed the methodolgy and how that adherence to the method resulted in evidince that you are building something people actually want!

You will leave the workshop with...
  • A copy of The Lean Startup, by Eric Ries
  • A copy of The Lean Entrepreneurby the authors of The Entrepeneur's Guide to Customer Development (Brant Cooper & Patrick Vlaskovits)
  • The ability to run any idea throgh the Validation Board, and run experiments to test if your assumptions are actually valid.
  • The ability do end team "discussions" with actionable tests rather than debates.
  • The ability to determine if your idea is a scaleable startup or a hobby.
  • The ability to build an MVP of any kind.
Who's this event for?

Any startup team that does not have Product/Market Fit, or any aspiring founder who wants to learn Lean Startup methodologies from the ground up. This is an intensive educational workshop, NOT a hackathon.

Got a new idea of your own? Great. You'll get a chance to tell the room about the problem you would like to solve. If your idea gets selected you will be able to form a team and start working.

No co-founders? No problem. You'll meet many talented and smart people and have the opportunity to hear their new startup ideas. Whatever you idea you work on, you will learn many valuable skills that you can later apply to your own business. We kindly ask that you please do not show up looking for a technical co-founder...that's not the goal of this experience.

Plan to work on your own, existing project?   If you want to ensure that you can work on your own idea and want to bypass the pitch process, be sure to purchase one of the "team tickets".

*An existing project is defined as one that already has mockups, prototypes or code associated with it. If that's the case, you cannot recruit others to join you. It is too difficult for participants to join a team that already has a specific vision, strategy or product in the works.

Read this stuff too, especially if you want a free ticket:)

  • If you are a student, (or want to make a case otherwise) you can apply for a scholarship by emailing: adam@leanstartupmachine.com
  • If you would like to volunteer in exchange for all meals and learning by osmosis (and a free ticket next time we are in town) email adam@leanstartupmachine.com
  • If you want a private workshop for your team any combination of Tues/Wed/Thurs of this week, please email adam@leanstartupmachine.com.
  • If you want to contact previous attendees, winners, etc to see if this workshop is a good fit for you... please email adam@leanstartupmachine.com and you will be put in touch with the appropriate alumni.
