Event description
Are people in the middle leaders or managers? Learn how to lead from the middle and unlock the the power of your position!

About this Event

This 3-hour workshop will be largely interactive and practical in orientation. While various concepts will be introduced, the emphasis will be on participants exploring ideas themselves through group discussion, problem-solving, and so on.

Are people in the middle leaders or managers? Middle leaders will often see themselves as the latter: this session is all about introducing you to wider possibilities, especially insofar as they can impact upon the performance of a department/unit.

Part 1: The squeezed middle

Leadership and management for middle leaders, including a consideration of some of the unique problems of being in ‘the squeezed middle’ (and implications for the leadership/management role of middle leaders). The problems of having to deal with both followers and senior leaders will be considered, as well as the extent to which the unique circumstances of teaching as a profession can restrict the scope of the leader’s role.

Part 2: Building your leadership identity

This would consider how leadership identities are constructed and suggest how collegial approaches and distributed leadership can be employed to move the ‘middle person’ from primarily a management to a leadership role.
