Description

We are delighted to invite you to an Art of Hosting Community of Practice with Bronagh Gallagher.

"'Complexity science is a revolution in worldviews and practices. For those of us involved in social change it presents some radical new thinking and ways of working for how we work in our organisations, how we build our movements and how we might shift deep seated patterns of injustice. Combining over a decade of experience working in non-profits and communities with an ongoing inquiry as to how lasting change really happens, I believe complexity science offers us one piece of the puzzle. It is offering us 21st-century thinking to match our 21st century problems, and I want to ensure social change workers can use and apply what it is teaching us." Bronagh Gallagher

Bronagh has been traveling Europe and North America studying the practices of Art of Hosting as applied to social movements and organizational change. She will return to NYC midway between two trainings “Working with the unknown… How to take action when everything is uncertain” in Europe and Canada. This article summarizes some of her thinking about social change and complexity science.

Everyone who is curious about cutting edge thinking of complexity science and what it means for personal and organizational leadership will benefit from this 2-hour Community of Practice.

Complexity science is a rapidly emerging field, which draws from understandings of society being a complex adaptive system. This means it is messy, it’s not possible to know for sure how to get from A to B or what action will really make the difference in the end. Instead, we must develop new ways of working which reflect the ever-changing nature of our social systems.

Working in and with complexity means we need to let go of certainties about where we are trying to get to and how to get there, and to start the journey of experimentation, testing small ideas, learning from failure and rapidly evolving the good ideas that work. For those of us working in organizations, this is a big leap from longterm strategies, outcomes, targets and indicators.

This 2-hour workshop (snacks at 5:30, start at 6 pm sharp) will provide a basic introduction to the science of complexity and what this means for your practice. It will draw on and go beyond CYNEFIN, Theory U and other frameworks that are commonly used in Art of Hosting practice.
