Resilience OC, in collaboration with CHIRLA, Latino Health Access, Western State Immigration Clinic, National Lawyers Guild, UCI’s Immigrant Rights Clinic, Asian Americans Advancing Justice - OC, and OC ACTS will host 9 leadership trainings that will give an overview of immigration issues impacting Orange County residents.

Key areas of the curriculum include:

  • knowing your constitutional rights, local policy & advocacy;
  • emergency family planning;
  • assistance navigating the healthcare system;
  • access and information on higher education, financial aid and the CA Dream Act;
  • latest updates on DACA and CA Driver’s Licenses;
  • analyzing campaigns to end local immigration detention and ICE collaborations with city and county governments.

The trainings will consist of readings, videos, lectures, discussions and panels. By attending one or all the sessions, participants will get a deeper understanding of the issues impacting immigrants in Orange County. Participants can build off this knowledge to work towards equity and justice in their communities, organizations, schools and workplaces. The trainings will take place on Mondays (except week 2) at Latino Health Access (450 W 4th St, Santa Ana, CA 92701) from 5pm-7:30pm. Translation in Spanish will be provided.


You only need to register for one of the dates to attend a portion or the entire series.


Nine Week Curriculum:

Week 1 (10/2/17):

Know Your Rights When Filming Local Law Enforcement -The National Lawyers Guild will review how you can utilize your rights to protect yourself and the community when interacting with law enforcement agencies. You will also understand the role of local law enforcement agencies enforcing federal immigration law.


Week 2 (10/11/17):

Expanding Sanctuary and Ensuring #DueProcess4All - Resilience OC will review the movement that brought Sanctuary and Universal Representation to the City of Santa Ana - laws that help to ensure Due Process as a Right for all Santa Ana residents, regardless of immigration status.


Week 3 (10/16/17):

Family Preparedness Plans and Rapid Raid Response -Western State Immigration Clinic will help navigate some of the complexities of family law in relation to power of attorneys and family preparedness plans. In addition, a panel of organizers and lawyers will discuss some of the needed work of responding to raids.


Week 4 (10/23/17):

Higher Education, Financial Aid and the 2011 CA Dream Act - CHIRLA will provide an overview of the requirements for eligibility of AB540, the CA DREAM Act, and financial aid programs available to eligible undocumented students in the state of CA. This workshop is geared towards students, parents, educators and anyone who attended 3 or more years of school in CA and are interested in accessing higher education.


Week 5 (10/30/17):

Health & Wellness, Immigration Access and Barriers - OC ACTS will discuss eligibility for current health programs in Orange County and systemic barriers to accessing and utilizing health coverage. OC ACTS will also share about recent Affordable Care Act repeal and replace efforts and advocacy steps moving forward.


Week 6 (11/6/17):

DACA, Driver’s Licenses & Public Benefits - Asian Americans Advancing Justice - OC will provide an overview of eligibility for driver’s licenses and public benefits. This workshop will also discuss legislative updates to DACA and the importance of getting screened by an immigration attorney for any immigration relief remedies.


Week 7 (11/13/17):

Trans Liberation, ICE Contracts & the Santa Ana City Jail - Resilience OC will cover the failed Santa Ana Jail Business Model, the movement to end Santa Ana’s decades-long ICE contract and the queer and trans resistance that pushed to #EndTransDetention.


Week 8 (11/20/17):

Local Entanglements, OC Sheriff’s Department & the 287(g) Program - UCI’s Immigrant Rights Clinic will cover the active collaboration between the OC Sheriff’s Department with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain and deport OC residents; and review CA state laws - Trust Act and Truth Act, laws which limit Police-ICE collaborations and offer protections to immigrants in detention.


Week 9 (11/27/17):

Social Justice Mixer and Graduation Ceremony - This training will wrap up any loose ends and questions, allow time for reflection and future goals, and lastly close with a group picture.
