The Regional System of District & School Support Presents:

February 2 and 3, 2017 at the San Ramon Valley Conference Center

A two - day workshop featuring Marzano Research Senior Scholar, Dr. Tammy Heflebower

Co-Author of The Leader's Guide to Formative Assessment and Standard-Aligned Grading

*Workshop participants will receive a copy of this publication.

Does aligning assessments to the CA state standards seem overwhelming? Are the grades you assign students a true reflection of their standards-aligned proficiency? Learn how to create formative assessments that give you and students meaningful information about the skills and knowledge they have gained through instruction, and use the assessment results to develop best standards-aligned grading practices!

Workshop Description

Dr. Heflebower explains the research and theories that support the kinds of feedback, assessment, and grading that enhance student learning. You'll also learn how to construct assessments, create rubric-based performance scales to inform both formative and summative assessments, and use the scales to monitor and affect students' progress. Best practices for standards-aligned grading are featured.

 Learning Outcomes

  • Explore the advantages and challenges of implementing standards-based assessment and grading practices.
  • Examine your current assessment and grading practices and identify strategies to ensure students’ strengths and weaknesses are accurately reflected.
  • Improve student achievement through meaningful, measureable and accurate reporting.
  • Design multiple assessments that inform instructional design.
  • Clarify learning objectives for your students.
  • Develop rubrics and proficiency scales to guide students' learning.
  • Track students' progress through research-tested methods.
  • Assess students for grades with consistent, reliable, and valid methods.

Testimonials

Principal - Tammy is an amazing presenter. She speaks to her audience, is perceptive about where they are in the process and takes this as her lead. She is also quite good at getting administrators and teachers to think about their positions. She leads them toward resolution when they are planting their feet and wanting to resist. We are so impressed with Tammy and appreciate her helping us get to the next step regarding assessment and grading for learning. Our staff benefited from Tammy’s presentation, and we highly recommend her.

HS Department Chair - Tammy was very articulate and poised. She answered difficult questions intelligently and believably. It’s a breath of fresh air to have a presenter who is highly intelligent, articulate, and knowledgeable.

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 requires each state to establish a statewide system of intensive and sustained support and improvement for local education agencies and schools receiving Title I funding to increase opportunities for all students to meet state academic content and achievement standards. As a result, the Regional System of District and School Support (RSDSS) was established, and partners with the California Department of Education (CDE), the Comprehensive Assistance Center, and county offices of education to form the Statewide System of School Support (S4) and satisfy the requirements of NCLB. The RSDSS of Region 4 provides leadership, resources, and technical assistance to the schools, districts, and county offices of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Solano in order to increase their collective capacity to support students in meeting or exceeding the state's academic content standards.
