Event description

Description

For lay and professional religious leaders who have or will have congregational responsibilities for pastoral care and pastoral visiting. If a pre-existing team exists, it is ideal for that team to attend together, but individuals may also attend. The workshop is also intended for religious professionals with pastoral care responsibilities who wish to grow a lay-pastoral care program in their congregation.

Presented by: Rev. David Pyle, and Woullard Lett, New England Region UUA

Providing Pastoral Care is a skill that takes time and intention to develop. This skill-building workshop for Lay-Pastoral Care providers and teams is designed to develop skills in focused listening, pastoral presence and communication, and emotional intelligence. It also explores the nature of both lay and professional pastoral care, and the roles and boundaries of each, as well as how to build effective Pastoral Care teams in different congregational settings. If congregational pastoral care teams attend together, then they will work together through the exercises and experiences of the workshop.

The workshop is also designed for Religious Professionals who have pastoral care responsibilities and are building or maintaining a lay-pastoral care program. Religious Professionals and others can take this training and materials and present elements of the workshop as continuing education for congregational lay pastoral care programs.

We will:

  • Explore the boundaries of both lay and professional pastoral care
  • Engage with why all pastoral care providers need support and supervision
  • Define what pastoral care is, and what it is not
  • Understand the nature and limits of pastoral confidentiality
  • Engage exercises on Focused Listening, Body Language, Storytelling, and Group Pastoral Care in crisis and trauma
  • Discuss the particulars of pastoral care in medical settings
  • Explore lay pastoral care as a form of Spiritual Leadership
  • Engage a model of Emotional Intelligence known as the 6 Feeling Families
  • Look at several different organizational models for lay pastoral care teams
  • Learn about the “Five Wishes” program and how some congregations integrate it into lay pastoral care

Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of the nature of lay pastoral care, as well as an understanding of professional pastoral care. They will know how to provide pastoral care with support and boundaries, and have a deeper understanding of what they might be bringing into any pastoral care relationship.

LOCATION: First Unitarian Church of Providence, RI at 1 Benevolent St, Providence, RI 02906

REGISTRATION FEE:

  • $25 per person when you register 1-4 from your congregation
  • $15 per person when you register 5 or more from your congregation

As learning takes root more effectively when four or more people from the same religious communities attend, you are encouraged to attend this workshop as a team.

While we know that not all individuals are in a position to pay these fees, since the learning is on behalf of the congregation, we assume that congregations will select and financially support participants who come. However, if these fees are prohibitive even to the congregation, please contact us at newengland@uua.org. We do not want cost to keep anyone away.

NOTE TO ALL ATTENDEES: Please bring your own bag lunch. Morning refreshments, drinks and afternoon snacks will be provided.

REGISTRATION CLOSES: Monday, February 11, or maximum capacity.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS:

  • If you or a teammate needs to cancel a registration before the event, please contact us as early as possible, by one week before the event at the latest, and a refund will be provided less a $5.00 administrative fee.
