Event Details

Lawik Bakaba meaning story of the sea is an interdisciplinary performance installation, exhibition, and workshop created by Nasha Bahasoean. The project is part of Nasha’s final MFA thesis in spatial performance and design at the Architectural Association School of Architecture. This multifaceted work combines live performance with installation, visual projection, film, and choreography. It is a social-cultural event to raise awareness about plastic in the ocean.

On 19-20th February 2020 Nasha welcomes you to attend an experimental Indonesian dance performance by a team of dancers from London, UK and Nan Jombang Dance Company from Padang, Indonesia. The performance is rooted in Minangkabau (West Sumatra, Indonesia) traditions of martial arts, dance and percussion.

The narrative is centred upon on a fishing tradition called Maelo pukek. The tradition upholds that a group of fishers pull the fishing net from the sea until it is drawn back filled with fish. In the present day, the fishers find more plastic waste than fish in their fishing nets. This shocking situation forces them to manually separate the copious amounts of plastic waste they find between the fish before selling them directly to visitors who come to the beach.

On completion of the performance Nasha will officially open her exhibition on plastics, a collaborative venture with Sejauh Mata Memandang.

On 23rd February 2020 you are invited to attend an intensive 1-day randai dance workshop lead by the artistic director of Nan Jombang Dance Company, Indonesia. Participants will get the unique opportunity to learn the basics of Minangkabau dance and wear traditional trousers for the dance.

The 4 hour workshop will be divided into 2 sessions with a 60 mins break. Participants are suggested to bring food and drinks for the break.

Session 1: 12 – 2 PM | Minangkabau martial arts technique

Session 2: – 5 PM | Randai technique & choreography

Nasha N Bahasoean is a designer and dancer from Indonesia, currently studying at Architectural Association majoring in Spatial Performance & Design (AAIS). As a designer, she has designed many projects in Jakarta, including window displays for executive brands, exhibition, installations and shows since 2016. Aside from focusing on the design field, since 2011, Nasha has actively participated in the international and national folklore festival as a main dancer, assistant choreographer, and team leader.

In the creative professions today, many individuals define themselves as being at home in more than one discipline. The AA Interprofessional Studio (AAIS) engages this new reality to explore alternative methods of collaboration between multiple creative professions. Through the research, design and production of a series of genre-defying spatial performances and constructions, we will examine the ways in which creative work and design overlap in the cultivation of unique project events.
