Event Details

In September 2013, the American Bar Association’s Death Penalty Due Process Review Project released its Assessment on the Death Penalty of Virginia, with the goal of improving fairness and accuracy in the use of the death penalty.  As the report states, “[A]s long as Virginia imposes the death penalty, it must be reserved for a narrow category of the worst offenders and offenses, ensure heightened due process, and minimize the risk of executing the innocent.”

This free CLE will focus upon the historical background of the report, its implications in Virginia and in other states, and how the death penalty discussion interplays with the dialogue on wrongful convictions.  The panel discussion will be moderated by the ABA’s Death Penalty Assessment Team Chair, Prof. John Douglass.

Speakers:
John Douglass, Professor of Law, University of Richmond School of Law
Michael Herring, Commonwealth Attorney for City of Richmond
Stephen Northup, Executive Director, Virginians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty
Mary Kelly Tate, Director, Institute for Actual Innocence, University of Richmond School of Law

Approved for 1.5 CLE credits
