Event description
Just can’t make it to Provence this year but need to get your lavender and wildflower fix? Come visit us in Palisade, Colorado!

About this event

The fields are alive with the sight and scent of acres of lavender in full bloom in mid-June! This is a sensory experience you are not likely to have anywhere else in Colorado. The head-spinning aroma therapy effect will get your day off to an amazing start at sunrise and just after. I’ve obtained permission from a couple of lavender farmers in town to allow our group to wander gently around their plants with our cameras. (gently being the key word here!) We’ll have a chance to get out the macro lenses as well as those trusty wide-angles and zooms to catch the sun as it rises behind The Grand Mesa with the fields of lavender flowers swaying softly in the foreground. Once the morning sun hits those blooms you’ll be swooning with the scent!

We’ll visit a couple of lavender farms in the area on Friday and Saturday to photograph the fields and do some shopping at their gift shops. But it’s not all work and no play! We’ll have lunch in quaint downtown Palisade, a photography destination of it’s own, built in the first half of the 20th century. where we’ll enjoy a Saturday Farmer’s Market, filled not only with arts and crafts, but also live music and fresh locally grown fruits, veggies and baked goods you can take home with you.

Friday afternoon we’ll take a drive up to The Grand Mesa, one of the most beautiful national forests in the country! At this time of the year the hills are covered with wildflowers! The view from Lands End is not to be missed! Not necessarily the best photography view, but DEFINITELY the best VIEWING view – you can see forever! The Grand Mesa is blessed with over 300 lakes, miles of forest – at least this time of year – undoubtedly millions of wildflowers! Bring your mosquito suit! I will.

Cost: $525

Fitness Level: Easy

Most photography will take place within several hundred yards to a mile from where we park our vehicles. Terrain is typically level and smooth but can be uneven and the walks up and down hills will have minimal elevation change.

“Easy” means you are able to:

• Stay out for most of the day, driving, walking, and carrying your gear

• Climb several flights of stairs without difficulty

• Walk on uneven ground without assistance

• Walk on wet, slippery surfaces without assistance

• Climb over obstacles (like a log on a trail)

Experience Level:

This workshop is appropriate for all levels of photographers. If you are a beginner, I can offer assistance in the field with your camera and composition, and if you are a more experienced photographer and would like to be left alone to do your own thing, I can do that too! Part of the joy of a weekend workshop is the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people. That said, we will be spending time on photographic composition and creative Lightroom techniques to assist you in taking home some beautiful photographic art.

Expected Weather:

Temps in Palisade and on The Grand Mesa are generally warm in June, sometimes hovering close to 90 degrees, a little cooler on The Mesa than in town. You might want to bring a light windbreaker and a mosquito suit or insect repellent. There’s lots of mosquitos on The Grand Mesa in June! Worth it for the beauty as long as you are protected!

• Water and snacks will be provided while we are in the field, and during classroom instruction. It’s recommended that you bring your own reusable water bottle so that only one large container will need to be purchased and we can re-fill all water bottles from that. This is more eco-friendly than providing individual plastic water bottles.

• All permits and fees to enter parks and privately-owned facilities

• Photographic instruction, classroom and in the field

• Image reviews, critiques & post-processing instruction

• Fun! Inspiration! A great time on Colorado’s beautiful western slope!

• The chance to make new friends and influence new people!

• Air transportation to or from Grand Junction/Palisade/Grand Mesa.

• Ground Transportation during the workshop – I recommend you rent a car if you’re flying in – we’ll be carpooling, but it’s always best to have your own transportation as an option if you like. The dirt roads we’ll be driving on The Grand Mesa can be made in a passenger car, but you might be most comfortable in a 4WD SUV.

• Lodging – Headquarters for the workshop is TBD. If you’re interested in this trip, you should let us know right away, so we can get the rooms reserved. I’m hoping to get rooms at a private retreat house on The Grand Mesa and the earlier we book, the better. Rooms run about $150 a night and you can cancel later if you need to. Lodging is not included in the cost of the workshop, so you’ll need to reserve as soon as possible. If you choose to stay somewhere else, you’ll be charged a $100 surcharge to help cover the cost of our meeting/work room. If you’re staying too far away, and it’s difficult to make it to our early morning photography sessions, we will have to leave without you to make the sunrise. If this happens, you can call me to find out where we are, or you can do something on your own that morning. You’ll still have fun – hey! You’re in beautiful Palisade, Colorado! But you’ll be doing something different than we are.

• Meals are not included. Alcoholic beverages are not included. Your spouse or traveling partner may join us for dinner that evening.

• Medical Evacuation & Travel Insurance (optional) – available through Allianz, AAA and other companies
