Description

Hike Rating: Easy; 1 mile hike for all walking abilities

Guide: Marilynne Keyser (mtkeyser@gmail.com)

This easy hike on a paved one-mile interpretive trail is family friendly and perfect for all walking abilities. It does have some up and down sections which are not appropriate for wheel chairs. At the Lava Cast Forest, we will be walking through a 6,000 year-old lava flow where we will find the casts of ancient trees. The Newberry Volcano to the south spewed hot pahoehoe lava to the Earth’s surface, spilling through standing forests. The trees became encased in stone when the lava cooled. What remained were “casts” of trees, many of which go down several feet below surface level. The surrounding landscape includes molds of the trees as well as many unique wildflowers. This hike will focus on native plants in this unique landscape.

Bring your Guide to Common Native Plants of the Deschutes Canyon Area. Guide books will be available for purchase before the hike ($10/FANs members or S12/non-members, payable with cash or check).

We will meet at the Crooked River Ranch Fire Station at 8:30 a.m. to arrange carpools. It takes about one hour and 15 minutes to drive to the Lava Cast Forest. If you want to drive yourself, then plan to meet us at 9:45 a.m. at the Lava Cast Forest Trailhead.

Group size is limited to 10 people, and dogs are not allowed on this hike. If you sign up and later need to cancel, please do so as soon as possible so that people on the wait list can be invited to join this hike. Thank you!

Directions: From Bend and points north take Highway 97 south to the exit 3 miles past Lava Lands Visitor Center. Instead of turning right toward Sunriver, turn left heading east on an unpaved road, F.S. Rd. 9720. After heading east for 8.6 miles, follow F.S. Rd. 9720-950 for 0.7 miles to the parking area for the Lava Cast Forest.
