Workshop Overview:

Telemental health, which may also be referred to under the term “telepsychology,” is growing in importance for a number of reasons. Standards, laws, and available technology tools are becoming robust enough to support a surge in availability of remote clinical services. This means greater availability of services for hard-to-reach populations as well as more opportunities for clinicians to expand their practice and gain more freedom of movement within it.

This course will address the vital components of how to reach clients/patients no matter where they are safely, securely, and successfully. It will begin with a professional orientation to telemental health terms and authorities. Then it will cover essential legal-ethical concepts such as jurisdictions, emergency management, assessment of clinical appropriateness, informed consent, tech selection, privacy, and security. The course will cover special standards for conducting and documenting intake sessions, ongoing sessions, and termination sessions. Finally, attendees will learn standards for effective delivery of services via videoconferencing.

Attendees will receive a booklet of telehealth practice checklists, as well as sample forms for telehealth informed consent and session documentation. This course will translate the legal and technical jargon of telemental health and HIPAA into clear and actionable information that you can apply directly to your practice.

Learning Objectives:

State the legal-ethical considerations for telemental health practice

Explain how to ensure client privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance as a telemental health clinician

List specific techniques and skills for effective interaction with clients over a video medium

Describe specific actions to take to ensure success in each telemental health session and client relationship

Identify protocols and other considerations for telemental health crisis and emergency situations

Recognize effective, ethical, and HIPAA-secure technology and tools for use in telemental health practice

About the Presenter:

Roy Huggins, LPC NCC, is a counselor in private practice who also directs Person Centered Tech. He has acted as a subject matter expert on HIPAA, security and clinical use of technology for licensure boards and both state and national mental health professional organizations.
