Event Details

We are pleased to invite you to the official launch of the pilot program for Virtual Incubation in East Africa, to be held from 5-7 pm on Friday, January 25th at the iHub, located on the 4th floor of the Bishop Magua Centre on Ngong Road in Nairobi, Kenya. “Virtual Incubation” describes a range of different mechanisms for promoting the growth of medium sized enterprises and start-ups outside the walls of a traditional business incubator. As such it offers the prospects of stimulating innovation and entrepreneurship beyond the main business centres of East Africa.

This project brings together infoDev (www.infodev.org) a global public program of the World Bank which works at the intersection of innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship and AfriLabs (www.AfriLabs.com), a pan-African network of technology hubs. This particular program will engage a number of different AfriLabs members: m:lab East Africa, a Kenyan mobile innovation lab; NaiLab, a Kenyan start-up accelerator, Dar Teknohama Business Incubator, a Tanzanian technology incubator; Hive Colab, a Ugandan collaboration, innovation and incubation space; and the Technology and Business Incubation Facility, a Rwandan technology incubator.

This project builds upon an earlier infoDev study of opportunities for ICT interventions in East Africa, and benefits from funding from UKaid. The pilot program will seek opportunities for inclusive growth, job creation and poverty reduction by targeting growth-oriented technology entrepreneurs in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania who lack access to traditional incubation services.

Our hope is that this pilot will reach hundreds of entrepreneurs, create jobs and provide valuable insight into best practices for virtual incubation, and offer much needed support to those same underserved technology entrepreneurs.

We hope that you will join us for the launch and the chance to meet the AfriLabs and infoDev teams and to learn more about this exciting new program.

Note: The event is officially sold out, but we have added some additional last minute tickets.
