About this Event

Launching Futures...Shining Light on STEM Education!

Get ready for an evening of food, fun, lights, drones, stars and more while:

  • Enjoying an outstanding keynote speaker, Dr. Tina Manglicmot, Director for STEM and Innovation for the Virginia Department of Education,
  • Hearing remarks from Dr. Julian Earls, retired Director of the NASA Glenn Research Center,
  • Recognizing five STEM award recipients, and
  • Meeting interesting attendees from the Hampton Roads education and industry communities

We’ll be coming together to celebrate what’s happening in early STEM education in our region! TowneBank is our Title Sponsor and a wonderful community partner. Make sure your company or organization shines as a mover and shaker in STEM.

Sponsorship opportunities abound so check them out today! Go to www.starbasevictory.org or contact Susan Long-Molnar at developmentdirector@starbasevictory.org.

We are holding this event to:

  • Honor five STEM Champions in the Hampton Roads Region
  • Initiate a regional conversation about the benefits of early STEM education
  • Recognize leaders in the promotion of STEM education
  • Raise money for elementary STEM education and a STEM scholarship

What is STEM? The acronym stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It is important because STEM pervades every part of our lives.

  • Science is about discovery. It’s continually happening in the world around us.
  • Technology is the toolbox of science and engineering...and it’s an expanding part of our daily lives.
  • Engineering is solving the important problems of today. It’s designing new roads and bridges, tackling the challenges of global weather changes, making environmentally-friendly alterations to our homes and much more.
  • Mathematics is the language of science and engineering. It’s how scientists and engineers convey their discoveries and solutions.

STEM teaching and learning goes beyond the mere transfer of knowledge. It engages students, emphasizing critical thinking and problem solving while developing creative and collaborative skills. Ultimately, STEM studies establish new connections between school, workplace, community and the global economy.

According to the STEM Education Coalition, “Exposure to formal and informal learning in STEM subjects, beginning at an early age and continuing through high school, prepares our nation’s students for the future ahead.” Let’s launch some futures by introducing elementary-age students to the value (and excitement) of the world of STEM.

Thank you for supporting STEM Education in Hampton Roads!
