Event Details

Ready?  We are going to run three main projects in parallel from July 11th to July 29th 2011:

Yes, that’s right!  We will run a Summer Camp for 150 kids and teens with a series of one week workshops to build capacity in a fun and engaging way through sports, visual arts, performing arts and technology.

All workshop will have a concrete result at the end of each week.  We will have a tournament on Friday mornings and a Show every Friday evenings where the performing and visual arts workshops can display their work.  We will have the book releases, exhibits and short films online as well. This will give our entire LATISM community an opportunity to be part of the project.

Initial Workshop Ideas:

Sports:   Soccer, Baseball, Volleyball, Basketball, Martial Arts

Performing Arts: Theater, Film, Dance, Music

Visual Arts: Watercolors, Photography, Sculpture, Ceramics

Academic Skills: English as a second language, Computer Skills, Entrepreneurship, Social Media 101, Spanish Immersion, Applied Math, Blogging 101, Vlogging 101

We will build a cyber room on the village in order to leave them connected with their new LATISM familia and the world.  The following will be included/installed:

1)      20 Laptops

2)      1 Router

3)      5 Flip cameras (to lend for max 1 day by the community members)

4)      5 Digital cameras (to lend for max 1 day by the community members)

5)      Microsoft Office Suite

6)      Photoshop

7)      Illustrator

8)      (we might add more things down the road)

The scope of this project is to build technical capacity among mothers to help them connect to the global community in order to:

1)      Join a supporting network of mothers

2)      Have the tools to express their voices and represent their community

3)      Create small online enterprises to improve their finances (help a mom and you help a family)

We will use the LATISM Cyber Rooms as the hub for the Mamá por Mamá project.  Ideally we will leave a group of local mothers in charge to train fellow mothers and to manage the Cyber Room and equipment loans throughout the week.

Please read for more information.

We have a limited space of volunteer spots.  The volunteers must have a great desire to help the community become economically sustainable.  Ideally volunteers will come to head up a workshop.

Language: Spanish or Creole are needed for some workshops.  However most workshops can use the help of a translator.

Volunteer Opportunities: Apart from Camp leaders we can use the help of volunteers who can set up the cyber room and help build quick websites, blogs and e-commerce.  So network experts will also be needed as well as computer teachers.  We would like to hold a series of computer classes on Photoshop, Excel, e-Commerce, SEO Marketing, WordPress, Website Building and other skills that they can quickly use as potential income generator.  Don’t worry if you have never taught (kids or adults) before.  We will give you the workshop format and a brief training.  If you are interested in joining us for any of the three weeks, please register here.

Schedule: The typical volunteer will work an average of 6 to 7 hours a day.  This give you enough time to enjoy the amazing virgin beach that is located right on the village.

Typical Schedule for Volunteers

9 to 9:45 Computer Class1

10 to 10:45  Computer Class2

11 to 11:45 Computer Class3

12 to 1 Lunch

2 to 3:45 Workshop1

4 to 5:45 Workshop2

6:00 Dinner

7:00 Tertulia (Optional)

8:00 Free Time

Volunteer Opportunities:

Cost: Each volunteer must pay his own trip to and from Santiago Airport – STI (in the Dominican Republic) as well as his room and board (included in this ticket).  The idea here is that we will live the same life style of the people so you must eat what they eat and live where they live.  You should bring a sleeping bag or an air bed.  For the food and a common room you should budget $10/day per person for the duration of your stay.

Transportation:  You must fly to Santiago Airport (STI) and we will send a driver to pick you up.  We still don’t know how much the driver will charge but you should be ready to pay from $20 to $40 for the trip.  In the event more than one volunteer will arrive on the same day, we will make sure you all come together and split up the cost.  Please make sure you are in Monte Cristi on the Sunday prior to your volunteer week.

Excursions: We will have great trips on the weekends to explore the island and recharge for the week workload.    You should calculate these outings to cost from $30 to $80 depending on where we decide to go.  The volunteers will vote on the destination.  There might be different excursions going on during the same weekend since the volunteers with kids might have different priorities than the volunteers who come without kids.

Come with your kids: The LATISM Summer Camp will also be open to the volunteer’s kids.  This will be a great opportunity to engage our kids to see a different reality while they learn Spanish, make new friends and have the best fun ever at the camp and the excursions.  We recommend that your kids are older than 4 to bring them.  There will be great volunteer opportunities for teens who might want to join us (accompanied  by at least one parent).
