Description

The Latino Arts Strings Program is delighted to present the 7th Annual Latino Arts Strings Program Guitar Festival and Youth Competition in the Latino Arts, Inc. Auditorium on Saturday, February 8, 2020. The 2020 LASP Classical Guitar intends to provide young musicians ages 8-18 with an opportunity to exhibit their talent and reward their hard work, as well as to encourage them to appreciate music from different cultural origins. We wish to encourage new generations of young guitarists to:

  • Explore and discover the pleasures of playing classical guitar

  • Experience a regional competition at a youth level

  • Sharing the stage as part of a guitar orchestrs

  • Play for world class judges

Featured Soloists:

A native of Minsk, Belarus, Elina Chekan combines active performance and teaching careers, performing as a soloist and chamber musician around the world. Recent appearances inlclude the Mannes Guitar Festival in New York City and the Madison Guitar Society Festival. She holds a Master of Music degrees in Orchestral Conducting, Pedagogy, and Classical guitar performance from the Belarus Academy of Music and a Master of Music Degree from Yale University.She is currently a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Cuban born guitarist, Rafael Padrón, began studying guitar at the age of eleven. He has been featured in festivals including the International Festival of the Guitar in Havana, Cuba and The Festival Iberoamericano de Guitarra in Tenerife, Spain.Additionally, Mr. Padron has performed as a soloist with Symphony Orchestra of Matanzas, Cuba and The Panamerican Symphony of Washington D.C., to name a few. He is currently the Program Director of Classical Guitar and Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

Ivan Resendiz
Originally from Mexico City, Iván Resendiz began his study of classical guitar at age 16 in La Escuela Superior de Musica del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico with teacher Alejandro Mendez. In 2006, Resendiz immigrated to the United States to continue his study of music, taking private lessons with Norman Ruiz and Denis Azabagic, professors of distinguished universities in Chicago: Columbia College and Roosevelt University. Resendiz has participated in numerous national and international guitar competitions, receiving top prizes in more than thirteen competitions.

Resendiz has been invited to participate in various radio and television programs in Chicago such as Vocalo Radio, Chicago Public Radio, CAN TV y Hoy Univision.

  • TO REGISTER FOR THE COMPETION – CLICK ON TICKETS.. ONCE YOU BUY THE TICKET, you will be asked to complete the formal registration form.

  • Parents of competition participants must purchase concert tickets separately. Click HERE to purchase.

  • Students entering the competition who would also like to perform in the master class will have the opportunity to take a class with one of three instructors; Elina Chekan, Rafael Padron, or Ivan Resendiz, based on a first come first serve basis.

  • Registration for the competition is $30 and includes the option to perform in a master class and attend workshops, along with one general admission ticket to the Awards Ceremony and Guitar Festival Concert on the evening of the competition at 7:00 p.m.

  • Application deadline is: February 1, 2020
