Guilty Men Film Poster

Colombia's foreign-language film Oscar submission.

This impressive feature fiction debut is set in Santander in 2005, when paramilitary groups were supposed to be in the process of disarming under then President Uribe’s impending treaty. Part love story, part political thriller, the film revolves around a rivalry between two men named René and Willington. When René announces that he’ll marry Mariana, Willington is furious, as he’s her ex and still madly in love with her. To complicate matters, René and Willington are both involved in illegal business activities involving extortion payments to local paramilitaries.

Receipts and money exchange hands at night on dirt roads, and this money becomes very tempting for both René, who is desperately in need of cash for his wedding, and for his rival Willington. A hit on the international festival circuit, having been selected in both Venice and Toronto, this excellent film had Hollywood Reporter raving, “Gaona’s sheer storytelling verve will have audiences worldwide hooked…”
