In 2004, Slanted Weblog, one of Germany's most important portals for typography and design, is launched by MAGMA Brand Design. A year later, the first issue of Slanted magazine was published, a combination of typography with editorial design: two worlds, each separate and asynchronous, but still harmonious. It is an attempt at reconciliation, paired with the urge to push boundaries, combine the unexpected and tell cinematic narratives. Order, standards and habits will systematically be broken.
Magma sees itself as a laboratory: experimental, curious, and instinctive. The work is full of character and identity. Magma is typo-pop.
Lars Harmsen studied Graphic Design in Basel and Pforzheim. Since 1992, he runs, with his partners Flo Gaertner and Uli Weiss, MAGMA Brand Design (www.magmabranddesign.de) in Karlsruhe, Germany. At the same time , he is creative director at MELVILLE Brand Design (www.melvilledesign.de) in Munich. Also since 2011, he is a professor of Typography and Design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund.
Harmsen launched the font label VOLCANO TYPE (www.volcano-type.de) and publishes the design & typography magazine SLANTED together with the award-winning blog SLANTED (www.slanted.de). He has published numerous books on design, and has been invited to conferences all over the world.
