Event description
Learn about long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and how to support teens in making informed decisions about birth control.

About this Event

Birth control is still accessible in Monroe County during COVID-19. This presentation includes up-to-date information on services offered during this time.

LARC stands for long-acting reversible contraception, and includes the intrauterine device (IUD) and the contraceptive implant. In this talk, ideal for adults who work with or talk to teens, you will learn about LARC, how to talk to teens about birth control, and how to connect teens to local family planning clinics.

This talk will cover:

1. An overview of data on teen pregnancy national and locally

2. A comprehensive overview of the safety and effective of LARC methods, especially for teens

3. The local availability of no-cost and confidential LARC and other family planning services, particularly on services that continue to be available during COVID-19.

Participants will receive informational handouts, educational resources, and referral information, and will have an opportunity for Q&A with our expert speakers.

Presenters:

  • Dr. Rachael Phelps, MD - a physician and the former Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York
  • Krysta Baccari, CHES - Health Educator

This talk is presented by the Greater Rochester LARC Initiative, a program of the Hoekelman Center in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester. The LARC Initiative is supported by a grant from the Greater Rochester Health Foundation and the Rochester Regional Health Foundation.
