Event Details

Back by popular demand, the South County History Center's Lanterns & Legends Tours at the Old Washington County Jail are returning this October!

Tour-goers will learn about some of South County's creepiest history, including brazen murders, gruesome executions and supposed vampires.  The tour highlights grim artifacts from the Center's collection that are not usually on display.

Tours will be offered on October 20th, 21st, 27th and 28th at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for Center members and students (including college).  Tickets must be purchased prior to the event.  Space is limited, and tours quickly sell out each year.

Lanterns & Legends Tours will take place in the historic Jail, which has many staircases and unfortunately is not handicapped-accessible. The Jail will be minimally lit, and guests may purchase a lantern for an additional $7 with their tickets that can be used on the tour and taken home.

The content discussed during the tour may be scary and difficult to understand for children younger than high school-age.

Private group tours are available!  Contact us at 401-783-1328 or erica@southcountyhistorycenter.org for more information and to schedule.

Proceeds from these special tours support the Center's efforts to preserve local history.

FAQs

Is the Jail handicapped-accessible?

Tours will be conducted in the Center’s headquarters, the 1858/1861 Old Washington County Jail, which has several staircases, and unfortunately is not handicapped-accessible.

I have a large group interested; can we have our own tour?

Yes, of course! Groups of up to 10 individuals can book a private evening tour by contacting us at 401-783-1328 or erica@southcountyhistorycenter.org.

Is the tour child-friendly?

The content discussed during the tour may be scary and difficult to understand for children younger than high school-age.

If I am a member, can I buy tickets for friends with my discount?

Supporter, Contributor, Patron and Benefactor members may purchase discounted tickets for themselves and their guests.  Individual and Family members may only purchase discounted tickets for Center members.

The Center will be verifying the membership status of all persons purchasing member tickets.  If purchaser is found not to have an active Center membership,  your tickets may be refunded.

I'm scared of the dark!  Do I need to bring my own latern?

While the Jail will be quite dark for tours, we will ensure that there is enough light for all visitors to safely navigate the facility.

Where do I park?

The Center will have limited parking available at the Jail for those visitors who need extra assistance. Street parking is available in Kingston Village, and visitors are encouraged to carpool.

Parking will also be available next door to the Jail at the Kingston Congregational Church.

Have there been paranormal sightings at the Old Jail?

Formal paranormal investigations have not be conducted at the Jail, but some visitors (and staff!) have reported unexplained experiences – not surprising given the building’s history!  Feel free to ask your tour guide about their experiences.

Who should I contact with additional questions?

Please email erica@southcountyhistorycenter.org or call 401-783-1328.
