About this Event

This lantern walk around Volkening Lake on November 10th, from 5 pm to ~ 6 pm is organized by a few parents from the DANK German Language Schools Chicago Northern Suburbs (http://www.chicagogermanschools.org).

Volkening Lake is the perfect location for such an event as it is free of traffic and offers safe parking for families with young children. If you are interested in coming along and singing German "Laternenlieder", please bring your lantern and RSVP.

The walk itself will take approx 30 min (0.7 miles). I will bring some hot chocolate for those that want to chat a little longer in the pavilion.

You may wonder: What is a lantern walk?

Laternelaufen (‘Walking with Lanterns’) is a German tradition for the time around St. Martin's Day. On November, 11th (or a few days before or after) children (usually in kindergarten and elementary school age) and their parents walk along the streets after dusk holding colorful, often self-made lanterns, and singing songs about their lanterns.

You don't have a lantern? Building a paper lantern is easy and your children will be proud of their lanterns lit with an electric tea light (CANDLES WITH OPEN FLAMES ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE PARK) in front of them. I have a few extra lanterns that I can give out during the event - please let me know.
