Landscapes of PropertyTour Description

Tour Host: Douglas Harris

The walk is intended to provoke thought and discussion about the nature of property and about the role of property law in shaping the landscape of the city.

Topics of discussion will include: the appearance, disappearance, and reappearance of the Squamish Indian Reserve at Kitsilano Point and the unresolved issue of Aboriginal title; the balance between public interests and private property in the debate over the future of the Arbutus rail corridor; and the role of condominium in the rise of property in the city.

Tour Host Bio

Douglas Harris teaches in the areas of property law, legal history, fisheries law, and Aboriginal rights in the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia, and is the author of a number of publications on the legal relations between Aboriginal peoples and the Canadian state in early British Columbia, including Landing Native Fisheries: Indian Reserves and Fishing Rights in British Columbia, 1849-1925.

He is currently working on a study of the role of property law in the transformation of urban centres. His particular focus is the City of Vancouver and the neighbourhoods around False Creek, sites of enormous ecological, social, and economic transformations in the past century.

Jane's Walk

Jane's Walk is held simultaneously in cities across Canada and other countries around the world. Inspired by Jane Jacob's and her belief that in order to know your city "you have to get out and walk," Jane's Walk is a simple idea. It is free, it connects people and builds communities by promoting urban literacy and citizen engagement.
