Landscapes as Political Documents: Art of Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School Speaker: Rena Tobey FREE ZOOM EVENT

About this event

Come explore 19th century American landscapes to reveal how American identity has been profoundly linked with the land. In this image-rich, interactive talk, we'll dig beyond the surface that creates a streamlined, but simplistic notion of the American character. Instead, we'll take a slow look at artworks that tell complex, often coded stories, reflecting both the challenges and greatness of our country. Artists include Thomas Cole, the symbolic head of the Hudson River School, Frederick Church, and artists who captured the west and life after the Civil War as represented in the land. Together, these artists established an international reputation for American art.

This virtual talk will include:

An overview of two generations of Hudson River School artists, some well-known, others less familiar

Considering the importance of Enlightenment thinking and Romanticism on landscape depictions

An understanding of the influence of Thomas Cole on other artists and on political and cultural thought that continues today

• A new ability to 'read' symbols and metaphors in landscape paintings that you can use during your next museum visit

Enjoying the beauty and majesty of these artworks
