The 1741 English pocket watch recently donated to Tudor Place by the Magruder family will be the starting point of a presentation by master restorers of time pieces George Thomas and Hartwig Balke of the Towson Watch Company. According to family history, the timepiece was a gift from George Washington to Eleanor Calvert (of Maryland's founding family) upon her marriage to his stepson. After 270 years in private hands, it was donated to Tudor Place in 2011.
Mr. Thomas and Mr. Balke will explain how watches were made in the 18th century and discuss how to recognize poorly made repairs. Exploring the history of timepieces from the 1500s, largely concentrated in England, they will discuss a range of makers and periods and showcase the range of tools they use, some as old as the watches themselves.
