The Land Navigation Practical is designed to introduce students to the basic skills used to navigate with map and compass.

About this event

The Land Navigation Practical is designed for individuals who have some knowledge of land navigation but would like to develop their practical skills under the guidance of knowledgeable navigators.  Those who have taken LN1-3, have a basic knowledge of navigating or who have been practicing their skills for a while will find this course useful.   This course is designed to develop navigation skills for various skill levels and to better prepare students to pass the Night Land Navigation Evaluation (LN4).

Basic navigation incorporates a technique called dead reckoning.  Dead reckoning will work in any part of the world and is the needed foundational skill in land navigation.   However, it can be time consuming and burdensome.   Techniques used in orienteering such as terrain association, attack points, catching features, hand railing, aiming off, collecting features and various other techniques will be demonstrated, explained and practiced in a hands on environment.

The class will locate a number of points together while reviewing and discussing the various techniques needed to navigate efficiently.  Students will progressively take over the navigation from the instructor.   Then students will practice finding points and will be able to review and discuss their technique with the instructors.

Students should have their own orienteering compass and should be familiar with basic land navigation techniques.  Graduates of LN1-3 (Land Navigation and Orienteering) are ideal candidates for this course.  Students should also be ready to navigate in wooded environments and moderately difficult terrain.   Water, snacks, and basic field gear are recommended.

This course is not eligible for the SAR member Discount.
