When & Where
In November 2009, humble seeds of change were planted. A group of Crown Heights parents allowed themselves to dream, to envision a new educational experience for their children.
Four families and a local educator gathered together and resolved to make that dream a reality: to bring the warmth, love and individualized care that Chabad gives the world, back to the children of Crown Heights.
Lamplighters was founded upon a commitment to reaching every child. We emphasize child-directed learning, cultivate emotional intelligence, encourage active parental participation and communication, and utilize holistic teaching methods under the guidance of recognized mashpiyim.
We are building a school where our children learn Torah with love and excitement, where Judaism and Chassidishkeit come alive through meaningful dialogue and exploration, where children’s individual passions and interests are nurtured and respected, and where, above all, we empower our children to grow to be confident, happy Yidden who will light up the world.
In 2012, Reb Moshe and Rivkah Schack joined the Lamplighters family as our new educational leaders. With their rare combination of Chabad and Montessori backgrounds, they’ve devoted the past seven years to studying, developing, testing and implementing Montessori methods and materials tailored to Jewish-Chassidic education.
Officially-trained Montessorians and founders of the Torah-Montessori School in Chicago, the Schacks are also conducting research, creating curriculum, and developing a professional training program that will enable mechanchim and mechanchos across the Jewish Orthodox spectrum to utilize Montessori methodologies for the benefit of their students. Lamplighters is the model school through which they have begun to share these gifts with the world, turning Crown Heights into the address for tried-and-true holistic Jewish education, and turning “chanoch lenaar al pi darko” from slogan into reality.
“It takes a village to raise a child.” We, the Lamplighters community, are reclaiming the village dimension in educating our children and joining together as one family with a common vision.
