About this event
"I always refer to Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross as the greatest vocal group in the history of jazz, and nobody ever gives me an argument." -Jon Hendricks
In 1957, Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and Annie Ross changed the course of Jazz with a single, remarkable album — Sing a Song of Basie. For the next five years, the trio reigned supreme — after all, they were blessed with extraordinary rhythm and supreme soulfulness, and breathlessly translated classic jazz instrumentals into a brilliant series of vocal jazz masterpieces. This is the story of the all-time greatest jazz vocal group that forever changed the jazz world.
Join New York Adventure Club on the 65th anniversary of Sing a Song of Basie as we celebrate the amazing legacy of the legendary jazz vocal trio behind the album — Jon Hendricks (1921-2017), Dave Lambert (1917-1966), and Annie Ross (1930-2020) — a group of exceptional singers who greatly expanded the possibilities of the human voice in improvised music while also taking the American art of jazz in a unique direction for the second half of its history.
Led by Will Friedwald, columnist for the Wall Street Journal, our virtual analysis and discussion of this legendary jazz vocal group will include:
- A deep dive into the early days of Jon, Dave, and Annie before their legendary collaboration, from their backstories and personal history, to the origin story of how they came together
- The great albums and recordings produced by the trio, from the songbooks of Basie and Duke Ellington, to classic explorations of Gospel, rhythm & blues, and bebop
- A close look at The Jon Hendricks Songbook, as interpreted by remarkable artists from Louis Prima to the Manhattan Transfer.
- Rare sights and sounds from the glory years of "LHR" (1958-1962)
- The aftermath of the group's breakup in the early 1960s, with a focus on their later projects and occasional reunions
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Will — any and all questions about Hendricks, Lambert & Ross are welcomed and encouraged!
