Title: Enabling Responsible Learning Analytics: Opportunities and Challenges

Summary: Artificial intelligence (AI) and learning analytics (LA) systems are fast-developing and intriguing technologies. They promise to improve student learning and facilitate educational processes through data-driven decision-making; however, using student data and analytics to improve learning and teaching raises a series of issues pertaining to student privacy, institutional responsibility, and ethical-legal considerations. With the remarkably increased digitalization and datafication of educational practices due to the recent forced turn to remote education imposed by the ongoing pandemic, the risks associated with AI- and LA-driven practices are acutely highlighted. While the LA research community has for some time been interested in a responsible way to address data-driven practices in education, this work has been largely conducted in conceptual terms without having a direct impact on practice at scale.

In this panel discussion, researchers and practitioners will come together with the aim of facilitating a much-needed conversation about what constitutes a responsible approach to data-driven educational practices today and what the challenges for the future are, as well as how such an approach can be enabled in the LA design and educational practices.
