About this event
MARIA APONTE is a Poet/Performance Artist/ Community Arts Activist/Educator. Maria has been interviewed on BronxNet TV, Bronx News 12, NBC Latino and on TEIMPO WABC-TV. She is a two-time recipient of the International Latino Book Award for Transitions of a Nuyorican Cinderella listed on RockThoseReads selected books about Harlem by Total Equity Now. And The Gift of Loss, her memoir dealing with the loss of her parents as a young teenager/adult and the healing process from that loss. Maria has her master’s degree in Latin American/Latino Studies from the Graduate School of Arts & Science Fordham University. Maria was the Assistant Director of Global Diversity and Inclusion in Career Services at Fordham University. Maria retired from Fordham University fall 2020 but will continue her work with students in other venues. Maria is founder and President of Latina 50 Plus™ a nonprofit program honoring Latina Pioneers. In July 2021, Maria received the Bronx Book Fair award for Community Service and Literary Excellent. Chacho and Carolyn
Percussionist Chacho Ramirez is a versatile player of wide repertoire, from Latin jazz, samba, and salsa, to swing, fusion and funk, performing on drum set, congas, bongos, and timbales. He has recorded three albums with his Latin jazz quintets, Metrotang and La Banda Ramirez, and has performed and/or recorded with Ahmad Jamal, Alex Blake, Hal Galper, Bill Jacobs, Ron Gill, and many others.
Flutist Carolyn Steinberg earned her doctoral degree in music composition from The Juilliard School and has written over 100 works of vocal and instrumental music. Playing Latin jazz flute with co-leader Chacho Ramirez of La Banda Ramirez, together they have built a unique book of music. She has produced four albums: “Songs, Dances, Duos,” “Lights Out,” “A Family Ting,” and “Cuban Butterflies.”
Together, Chacho and Carolyn co-lead their band, La Banda Ramirez, playing salsa arrangements, Cuban classics, and Latin jazz throughout the New York metropolitan area.
