Lafayette Parish Democratic Executive Committee Sixth Annual Awards Banquet
Thursday, October 17, 2013 from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM (CDT)
The Lafayette Parish Democratic Executive Committee presents its Sixth Annual Awards Banquet to celebrate outstanding leadership within the party and throughout the state. Four deserving leaders will be applauded for their contributions to their communities. This year, Lafayette's DPEC recognizes two individuals for their lifetime achievement, Opelousas Mayor Donald Cravins, Sr. and Ms. Clara Burke who served as director of the Lafayette Council on Aging for over 30 years. Both have made outstanding contributions to our community.
In addition, the event will recognize its Outstanding Educator, Dr. Pearson Cross, who heads the Political Science Department at the University of Louisiana - Lafayette. The committee proudly announces that Sheriff Mike Neustrom will be presented a newly crafted award: the Governor Kathleen Blanco Excellence in Leadership Award, by the Governor, herself.
Members of the committee welcome supporters to join together for the fundraiser for an evening to remember with state leaders of the Democratic Party and their peers. Our venue was changed to the Holiday Inn when the doors were closed on the Lafayette Ballroom. We are so fortunate that the "Holidome" at 2032 NE Evangeline Thruway had our date available!
Joining us in the presentations will be Representative Stephen Ortego, Party Vice President Shane Riddle, youngest-ever DPEC member James Thomas. How fortunate we also are to have Governor Kathleen Blanco present the award named for her. Mayor Purvis Morrison, of Scott, will be guiding us through the evening as Master of Ceremonies, as we extend a welcome to our guest speaker.
Our speaker is a man whose colorful life has made him a man of notoriety in all kinds of circles. Edwin Edwards, who led Louisiana from 1972 until 1980 as its governor, will take the microphone and address the gathering, October 17, at the Lafayette Democratic Parish Executive Committee's Sixth Annual Awards Banquet. He will also be selling and signing his biography during the reception.
Additionally, look for an opportunity to support our local food pantry, thanks to the generous offer of the Northshore Democratic Women's Club and their Cookbook for the Hungry.
Come with intentions to help jumpstart the party for 2014 at this special event. The event reception begins at 6 p.m. and the actual program and dinner begin at 7 p.m. Recommended dress: semi-formal or business attire.
We wish to extend our sincere thanks to the Glenn Armentor Law Corporation, Cox Communications and the Barber Law Firm for their part in helping bring a star-studded evening together for the community.
We are sad to learn of the unfortunate turn of events at the Downtown Lafayette Ballroom & Bistro. At the recommendation of the business owner, we are changing the venue to the Holiday Inn. There will be ample parking and the site is a tried and tested venue for events such as ours. We anticipate a fabulous evening for all who come and we recommend purchasing your tickets quickly in that we anticipate a sell-out event.
