WOMEN IN POWER

To coincide with International Women’s Day, we host a private tour of "Women in Power" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Museum Lecturer Margaret Samu will share with us images of women who had considerable clout and were forces to reckon with in their day. From Hatshepsut, the female pharaoh who ruled Egypt for over two decades, to the art "matronage" of Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, Madame de Pompadour, and beyond, this tour will take us from sculpture of the ancient world to 20th-century paintings. Looking at these objects will start conversations about the various ways women have asserted power throughout history, and how images of these women convey or contain their power.

The tour starts at 6pm sharp. We meet in the Great Hall of the Museum. I will share a map upon your ticket confirmation.

Starting February 20th, a portion of the proceeds from your LadyDrinks ticket purchase goes towards a nonprofit which is works to change gender dynamics in low-income communities. KIOO Project teaches photography to girls in a module in the morning. In the afternoon ----the girls teach the boys.

This peer-to-peer teaching develops leadership and presentation skills in girls, while boys see the value of girls. The 2019 project is currently underway in Uganda and founder Babita Patel is teaching modules there. Girls who finish a year-long workshop can go on to enroll in a teaching assistant (TA) training program.

Here is a short film from the KIOO Project India workshop where students speak about the impact of the program.
