Dive into the deep waters of mixing and production and learn how to flow by mixing your favorite songs together or creating your own! Participants will learn to critically listen to music to decide how to best flow from one track to the next in a DJ mix, or create similar music and beats using Ableton. This two-part workshop will give you the tools to express your soul sounds- a dose of hydration for your creative spirit! These session will be geared toward those who have a baseline of knowledge about music and/or DJing, but will be beneficial to rookie and experienced DJs and producers alike.

The first session will cover mixing skills to help you learn how to put together a DJ set. We'll review basic mixing concepts such as BPM, phrasing, and mix points. Then we will critically listen to our favorite music and learn how to break songs apart to determine how best to mix them, covering different techniques that DJs use to mix one track into the next. By the end of the session, you'll turn your playlist of 15-20 songs into a flowing, coherent mix of about 5 songs, and have the chance to get your hands on DJ equipment to practice mixing your tracks.

In the second session, we will focus on critical listening skills to understand how their favorite tracks are produced. We'll then explore the basic skills of operating a digital audio workstation (DAW), building a drum kit, using digital musical instruments and MIDI, and and other musical and production skills needed to build a basic beat. Your curiosity and creative juices will be flowing wildly after this session, leaving you ready to explore the ocean of your soul sounds.

Open Decks: Enrollment in one or both of the sessions includes one 45 minute appointment to mix at our Open Decks at Latela Gallery. We'll provide the equipment, you provide a playlist, and we'll be there to help troubleshoot in a low pressure, loving environment.
