Description

Learn about groundbreaking women in science and STEAM careers as you tinker and experiment in the First Ladies Laboratory. Students will build critical thinking and problem solving skills that will help them blast off into the 21st century.

This class is best for ages 9-12. Cost: $5 per participating child.

January 13, 4:30 PM Paper Circuits
Did you know that the classic movie star Hedy Lamarr was also an inventor? Learn about her invention of the frequency hopping technology used today in Wi-Fi and cell phones. We’ll also experiment with codes to create a paper circuit greeting card with a secret message.

February 10, 4:30 PM Art-o-Matic Intelligence
If you’ve seen the film Hidden Pictures you’ve probably heard of Katherine Johnson a NASA mathematician whose calculations were critical to the success of some of the first U.S. spaceflights. We’ll look at Katherine and her groundbreaking peers and also study some more recent space missions. We’ll create our own drawing robots inspired by the Mars rover.

March 9, 4:30 PM Architecture Challenge
Learn about the heroic life of Emily Roebling, an American field engineer responsible for the execution of the Brooklyn Bridge. We’ll take a look at the science behind bridges and create our own toothpick and marshmallow constructions, which we’ll put to a stress test.

April 13, 4:30 PM Planetary Poetry
Celebrate Earth Day with some planetary poetry and citizen science. We’ll explore teen climate activist Greta Thunberg and her mission to combat climate change as we create Earth inspired poetry and seed bombs.

May 11, 4:30 PM Blast Off Rocket Design
Learn about Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman astronaut. In this class we’ll talk about Mae’s career and the surprising Star Trek role model that inspired her as a child. We’ll study the chemistry behind space shuttles and create our own film canister rockets.
