Event description
Learn about groundbreaking women in science and STEAM careers as you tinker and experiment in the First Ladies Laboratory at home!

About this Event

Students will build critical thinking and problem solving skills that will help them blast off into the 21st century. Each box will contain supplies for a fun at home activity inspired by a groundbreaking woman in science as well as a link to a video with stories and instructions.

This box is best for ages 8-12. Cost: $15 per participating child.

Participants will receive a box in the mail as well as a link to related videos.

September: Blast Off Rocket Design

Learn about Mae Jemison, the first African American woman astronaut. In this box you’ll learn about Mae’s career and the surprising Star Trek role model that inspired her as a child. We’ll study the chemistry behind space shuttles and create our own film canister rockets.

October: Art-o-Matic Intelligence

If you’ve seen the film Hidden Pictures you’ve probably heard of Katherine Johnson a NASA mathematician whose calculations were critical to the success of some of the first U.S. spaceflights. We’ll look at Katherine and her groundbreaking peers and also study some more recent space missions. We’ll create our own drawing robots inspired by the Mars rover.

Kits available for purchase during the month of October.

November: Cracking Codes and Blinking Cards

Did you know that the classic movie star Hedy Lamarr was also an inventor? Learn about her invention of the frequency hopping technology used today in Wi-Fi and cell phones. We’ll also experiment with codes to create a paper circuit greeting card with a secret message.

Kits available for purchase during the month of November.

December: Matter and Motion: The Physics of Hovercrafting

We’ll learn about Newton’s Law of Motion as we construct and race our own hovercrafts. We’ll also explore the science behind atoms as we read a story about scientist Wu Chien Shiung, who overcame discrimination to discover the secrets of the atom.

Kits available for purchase during the month of December.
