Description

Hackentine's Day Logo

Hackentine's Day is for women and girls of all skill levels and ages to get together and build something radical.

If you’ve *never* written a line of code in your life, but you want to learn, we want you here! If you’re a super awesome programmer who knows more about compilers than Grace Hopper, we’re honored to have you. You’ll leave Hackentine's Day with a fully functioning project that you can call your own.

We'll provide coffee, lunch, and cupcakes (vegan/GF options). You provide your awesome self.

What will we build?

E-Valentine's Day cards!

Schedule for Saturday, February 8th

  • 10:00am - 12:00am: HTML/CSS
  • 12:00pm - 1:00pm: LUNCH!
  • 1:00pm - 3:00pm: jQuery & intro to JS

Why should I learn to program?

Because the future depends on you. Even if you only know a little bit, knowing more about how the internet works can open up opportunities for you. Programmers are paid *well* to solve fun problems all day. Shouldn't more women and girls be joining in? We think so.

Programming is not scary. It is not lonely. It is not mathematical. We've created a safe space for you to learn and ask questions. We're here to start a revolution, be a part of it!

What should I work on?

  • We provide an easy to follow beginner tutorial for HTML/CSS
  • We provide an intermediate project tutorial featuring JS
  • Or, hack on your own!

Wait, I'm not a lady.

Well, barely are we! But we're redefining what it means to be a lady.

Guests of all genders are welcome, as long as male attendees are the personal guests of a lady attending.

Important!

Hackentine's day checklist for attendees <3

  • Bring your excited yourself (and a friend!)
  • Have Sublime text editor or Textmate downloaded on your computer
  • Have a browser (we like Chrome, but any browser will do!)

*** Thanks to Uber software engineer Martha Kelly Girdler (who is leading Hackentine's Day) & Uber engineering for supporting Hackentine's Day! ***

About the organizer

Organized by
Hackbright Academy

Hackbright Academy is the Software Engineering School for Gender Equality. We were founded in 2012 with a single purpose—to give individuals of diverse backgrounds the power and skills to build a long and successful career in the tech industry. We partner with like-minded organizations and companies so that our impact has the farthest possible reach and remain committed to the continued growth in the communities we serve.

Since 2012, Hackbright has been offering the Full-Time Software Engineering Program, a 12-week accelerated software development training program exclusively to learn Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, OOP, TDD, pair programming, Git, and the Flask web framework. In addition to the full-time program, Hackbright offers a Part-time Software Engineering Program to give working professionals the same opportunity to learn.

Hackbright's Prep Course is designed to give individuals a foundation in programming, a taste of life as a coder, and prepare them for the bootcamp application process.
