Title: Improving Cultural and Self-Awareness in Counseling Education Curriculum

Description: Multicultural competence is essential in counseling education, requiring a deep understanding of both cultural awareness and self-awareness. This presentation explores strategies for fostering cultural competence among counselors-in-training (CITs), emphasizing reflective practices, assessment tools, and ethical considerations. Through models like Sue’s Multidimensional Facet of Cultural Competence and Pedersen’s Three-Dimensional Model, we examine how counselor educators can integrate self-awareness, compassion, and cultural humility into training programs. By addressing barriers in online and traditional learning environments, this session provides practical approaches to enhance CITs’ ability to engage with diverse populations while promoting equity, inclusion, and ethical responsibility in counseling practice.

Objectives:

  1. Identify strategies for integrating cultural competence into counselor training programs, particularly in online education settings.
  2. Examine the role of self-awareness in fostering cultural competence and ethical practice among counselors-in-training.
  3. Explore practical applications of multicultural counseling models to enhance cultural sensitivity in professional practice.
  4. Assess challenges and solutions in developing cultural competence within counselor education programs.
  5. Apply reflective and assessment tools to promote continuous self-awareness and multicultural competency development
