Lab 2 REPETITION: "Develop modern applications with Db2 and Docker" (Paul Jud, IBM Switzerland) [Nano*]

Level: Medium - Basic conceptional understanding of programming models and hands-on experience helpful

Prerequisites:

- Bring your own Laptop

- Internet Connection (Bring your mobile hotspot or rely on IBM Internet onsite)

- Docker pre-installed

- Virtual Box, VMWare, or Fusion pre-installed

- A minimum of 8Gb of memory and 30Gb of disk space is required once the image is expanded

- Threading and virtualization (VT-x) is enabled in their BIOS (Mac always has it turned on but Windows machines...it depends)

Objectives: Db2 is well known as a high-performance, simple to use, enterprise-class database system. Running transactional/operational workloads is one of the primary use cases for Db2. However, while the line-of-business and database administrators may have a preference for Db2, application developers are increasingly more influential in database selection. When deciding on a database platform for their operational applications, developers may pass over Db2 in favor of something they consider more "modern".

How can we overcome their (incorrect) impression of Db2? By convincing them that Db2 is well-suited for the modern application developer and showing them that Db2 has the features and capabilities that will make their jobs easier. For instance, Db2 is able to store both relational and non-relational data (e.g. JSON and XML) in a single data store. Db2 is simple to deploy via Docker containers and is also available on-demand in the cloud. Additionally, there are modern data access methods and development options available to them -- which is the focus of this lab.

This lab explores the use of Docker to develop modern applications with Db2. Readers will learn how to navigate the use of Docker containers to learn Jupyter notebooks, Db2 extensions to Jupyter, Python development, Open Data RESTful APIs for Db2 data access, management of Db2 using Data Server Manager, and how to use portions of the Data Conversion Workbench to estimate client migration efforts from Oracle systems to Db2. Whether you are talking directly to the development team at your client or are talking to those people that have influence over the database systems being considered for new application development, what you learn in this lab will allow you to explain to them why Db2 is the right database choice for their development needs.
