About this Event

LA VILLA/THE HOUSE BY THE SEA (2017) by Robert Guédiguian, director of MARIUS ET JEANNETTE, with Ariane Ascaride et Jean Pierre Darroussin.

By a little creek, Calanque de Méjean, just outside Marseille lies a picturesque villa owned by an old man. His three children have gathered by his side for his last days: Angèle, an actress living in Paris, Joseph, who has just fallen in love with a girl half his age and Armand, the only one who stayed behind in Marseille to run the family’s restaurant. It’s time for them to weigh up what they have inherited of their father’s ideals and the community spirit he created in this magical place. The arrival, at a nearby cove, of a group of migrants will throw these moments of reflection into turmoil.

A father’s legacy is revealed in this stirring tale of regret, nostalgia and the true meaning of community spirit, blended with comedic moments.

The shimmering cinematography ensures that the Calanque de Méjean provides a magic and beautiful setting for the musings on tradition, memory, depopulation, class and defying age, with the final sequence beneath the echoing arches of the railway viaduct being indescribably beautiful and filled with hope.
