Description

FREE LECTURE SERIES for those affected by the La Tuna Fire and those who serve that community.

Misunderstanding Wildfire: Why the public, the media, and the politicians usually get it wrong with Rick Halsey

During and after nearly every wildfire, breathless media accounts promote misconceptions, politicians point fingers, and the fire service is often criticized for not responding properly. This lecture examines some of the causes of these counterproductive reactions, misunderstandings about California's unique fire environment, and possible solutions to help citizens better adapt to the state's fire-prone climate, especially those who are near or surrounded by the chaparral, California's most extensive ecosystem. Rick will also touch on landscaping in fire-prone areas.

Richard W. Halsey is a writer, photographer and the director of the California Chaparral Institute, a non-profit research and educational organization dedicated to the preservation of California's chaparral ecosystem, helping communities understand the dynamics of wildland fire, and supporting the creative spirit as inspired by the natural environment.
