THE PRESIDENT'S CLASS - FALL 2019

Los Angeles Stories: Interpreting the City of Angels

Week 8

Stories You Don't Want to Tell: Jerry Stahl's Hallucinatory Los Angeles

“There are stories you don’t want to tell, and there are stories that scald your brainpan right down to the tongue at the mere thought of uttering. But you can’t NOT. Even if you wait until your skull is nothing but a charred and smoking husk, the truth will still be in there, squirming.” ―Permanent Midnight

About the Series:

We are the stories we tell ourselves. Is a city the same? Here at the Philosophical Research Society, we think it is, and Los Angeles is a city that has a plethora of stories to tell. In fact, Los Angeles has been the center of storytelling for centuries now, so its stories are different than other cities’ in kind if not in number. Some stories are small and shallow and fade quickly; others are large and deep and become myth. In this ten-week series, President Greg Salyer, Ph.D. leads us through the mythical dimensions of the City of Angels.
