About La Mixta Criolla

A music and dance ensemble inspired in the rich and diverse musical culture of Puerto Rico and the greater Caribbean. The group’s repertoire of originals and funky renditions of traditional tunes, features a variety of swinging Caribbean grooves, from plena, bomba, guaracha jíbara, seis and aguinaldo, to merengue, son, rumba, cumbia and salsa. And the band is as comfortable, and passionate, playing a bolero, a slow seis con décimas, or a classic danza.

La Mixta's sound is based on the mix of "cueros, cuerdas y voces" - skins, strings, and vocals – with Héctor Lugo on bongó, panderos, barriles, vocals, and percusión menor; Javier Navarrette on congas, cajón, percusión menor, and vocals; Sandra García Rivera on vocals and güícharo; Camilo Landau on Puerto Rican cuatro (a ten string guitar descendant of North African instruments that came to the Caribbean via Spain) and vocals; and Ayla Dávila on bass and vocals. The group’s debut CD AfroTaíno also features Jacky Rago on Venezuelan cuatro (a four string guitar of similar ancestry as its boricua cousin); Miguel Luciano, Ronald Rosario, and Yaya Maldonado on lead vocals; Enrique Quique Dávila on accordion and vocals; Carlos Caro on güira, Julio Perez on tambora dominicana, Enrique Hernández on the saxos, Alí Choco Luna on requinto, Yuseff Pili Martínez on tres dos, and Chris Flaco Walker on tumba.

Some of La Mixta’s performances feature traditional Bomba dancing, a centuries old form of Afro-Puerto Rican music and dance characterized by structured improvisation and the intricate dialogue established between the bailador(a),the dancer, and the primo or lead drummer. The group's principal dancers and choreographers are Shefali Shah and Christina Navarro, with the collaboration Jo-Annie Seda, Alí Luna, and Jahman Lee.

In Puerto Rico, "una mixta" (a mixta) is the quintessential combination of rice and beans with a meat and/or vegetable accompaniment. Every small restaurant or "fonda" has its mixta of the day and patrons know they can count on getting a home style meal full of flavor and, in many cases, love. In the Latin Caribbean at large the term "criolla/o" refers to the blend of African, Spanish-Mediterranean, and Aboriginal cultural influences that give some of the region’s cultures their distinctive character and flavor. Our Mixta combines a variety of these influences to cook up a musical stew worthy of the most humble fonda!!!
