Event description
The La Mujer festival is the ESB Mexican American Cultural Center’s annual event honoring womxn.

About this Event

This multi-disciplinary event includes a women in film screening by “Cine Las Americas”, a Latinx leadership panel hosted by “Chingona Fest Texas”, a visual art exhibit called ChingonX Fire curated by April Garcia, plus a stellar lineup of dance, music, and comedy performances and an artisan mercado curated by “Frida Friday ATX”.

On Saturday, April 18 at 2:00pm, the festival kicks off with film and panel discussions on Latinx activism and leadership in the arts. April Garcia will offer curator-led tours of her Chingonx Fire exhibit and engage youth and adults in free hands-on art activities. Local performers including the all-female mariachi group Las Corenelas and A’Lante Flamenco will take the stage on the Zócalo (outdoor plaza). Tk Tunchez from Frida Friday ATX & FUEGO ATX will curate a special onsite FUEGO, a gender-diverse and queer dance party & performance featuring local talent. The Friday Friday ATX womxn of color artist marketplace will feature over 20 booths with handmade items for sale. Food trucks will be parked on site and there will be a shuttle service from Sanchez Elementary to the MACC for ease of parking. The festival ends at 8:00pm and shuttle service will continue to 9:00pm.

At 4:00pm, we will gather for the unveiling and public inauguration of the major public artwork made by the Caminos Teen Leadership students. The “La Mujer” mosaic mural made up of thousands of individually cut glass tiles honors Latina celebrities as well as unsung heroes from Texas. This 25-foot, double-sided mural wall will redefine the concept of a “wall” as an object that can educate and unite people rather than divide us. The teen students chose to create this massive artwork inspired by the contributions of Latinx women, and they have honored them by immortalizing their likeness in the artwork. They have created images of activists, symbolized by Dolores Huerta, politicians (Sonia Sotomayor), artists (Selena Quintanilla & the Flor de Toloache Female Mariachi Group), educators (Emma Barrientos) as well as local mothers, sisters, and children of the Latinx community
