LA Made: Screening of "Raising Zoey" + Panel Discussion
Event Information
Description
The pioneering Outfest documentary "Raising Zoey"--by Latino filmmaker Dante Alencastre--follows one of Los Angeles’ bravest and youngest trans rights activists, 13-year-old Zoey Luna, just after winning a case against her school district for discrimination, as she begins hormone treatments, and as she publicly advocates for change with her mother and sister always by her side.
Zoey wants nothing more than to simply go to school, learn, and have fun with her friends in Downey, CA. Unfortunately, ignorance and intolerance have not always made this easy. With the help of her mother Ofelia, her older sister Leticia, and the ACLU, Zoey fought school officials for her right to self-identify in school. Even in the face of bullying and endless teasing from both school officials and students, Zoey determinedly continues to live her life as she is and tells her story in the hopes of helping others persevere in living their authentic life.
A Q&A panel session with the filmmaker, Zoey, and her mother Ofelia follows the screening--moderated by noted trans-rights activist Drian Juarez (from Grindr for Equality).
Filmmaker Dante Alencastre won Outfest’s Audience Award in 2007 with EN EL FUEGO (IN THE FIRE) and then returned to Outfest in 2013 with TRANSVISIBLE: BAMBY SALCEDO’S STORY.
